Biografia do Artista para Dorp

DORP The Story Began When Piet Bez A Flame-Haired Prophetic Singer And His Guitarist Friend Kevin Floyd Set Off On An Adventure. Their First Move On Leaving Capetown Was To Throw Off Their Ska Shackles Doesn’t Everyone These Days? And “replace Their Sax Player With A Frenchman With Decks ” In The Shape Of Gentle Giant Fred KU. After A Year Gigging Around London As An Eccentric Drill’n’bass Disco Outfit They Decided To Bite The Bullet And Add A Token Londoner. Luck Was On Their Side When It Turned Out That Rob Driver Could Also Play Drums.

Already Making Waves And Eccentric New Sounds The Arrival Of Rob Set The Dorp Project Spectacularly On The Way With Four Global Influences Crashing Together To Forge A Virgin Sound. Rob’s UK Rock Influences And Fred’s Love Of Techno Made Something Even Wilder When Combined With Piet And Kevin’s Unique Perspective As Kevin Explains “We Were In South Africa Doing The Whole Britpop Thing When It Took Off Oasis Blur… We Loved It Because We Had American Music Coming Over As Well And Australian Music So We Didn’t Get Caught Up In The Whole Grunge Thing Or Anything. There’s A Different Kind Of Sound In The Southern Hemisphere.”

The Result Was The Creative Urges Of Avant Garde Europe Wedgied Onto The Pop Nous Of Southern Hemisphere And Proudly Unfashionable Pop Dynamos Like Split Enz With The Cream Of Industrial Western Rock Like Nine Inch Nails And Marilyn Manson And The Theatrical Punk Spirit Of My Chemical Romance.

Kevin And Piet’s Heritage Also Gave Them Their Name ‘Dorp’ Being An Afrikaans Word For ‘small Village’ Or ‘shanty Town’. “We Were Very Against All These Bands Who Were Popping Up In South Africa And They Were Grabbing All These Seattle-Sounding Grunge Names ” Says Piet. “But There Was So Much Going On In South Africa But Not Only That We Were Going To Get The Uncoolest Name We Could Think Of. When Something Is Really Backwards You Can Say That Is ‘so Dorp’.”

Politics And Society Loom Large Over Dorp’s Music From Their Barbed Lyrical Skits To The Giant Zombie Version Of The Queen Of England Or George W Bush On Their Onstage Movies – Riffing Mercilessly In Multimedia Over Global Colonialism.

“We’re Not Taking The Piss Out Of America Because We’ve Got This Big Grudge Against Them ” Shudders Piet. “It’s Just Because They Make It So Easy.”

“They Lay Themselves Up On A Silver Platter ” Adds Rob. “Clinton Was A Cool Mofo Respect To The Man But Bush Has Just Lost It.”

But Dorp Aren’t Just Out To Take Potshots At Politicians Lead Track ‘London Out There’ Is A Bloodcurdling Case-In-Point Tackling The Relentless Killer Pace Of Life In The Capital Where “you Grasp It Or It Kills You But It Still Burns You Out ” While ‘A List’ Turns The Pop Medium On Its Head Using Their Most Radio-Friendly Chorus To Muse On The Empty Price Of Fame.

‘Giggly Moods’ Is Says Piet “a Song For All The Talentless Hollywood Offspring Of Talented Hollywood Parents ” While The Album’s Tour De Force And Title Track ‘Invisible Man’ Takes About “how America Just Assumed The Position Of World Sheriff With The Line ‘America Saves The World Again.”

“We Don’t Want To Be Prophets And Preachers ” Continues Piet “all The Topics That We Do Touch Is All Tongue In Cheek It’s Seeing The Humorous Side In The Politics.
In Fact All Dorp Want To Do Is Reclaim Pop Music As A Force For Invention Debate And Subversion Which – Easy To Forget In A World Ruled By Talent Contests And Tabloid Gossip Columns – Was What It Was Invented For. And If The Music Conjures Up Apocalyptic Techno Fantasies They’re Brought To Even Sharper Hyper-Reality By The Live Show’s Situationist Visuals A Fast-Moving Technicolour Visual Soundtrack That’s Just As Inflammatory As The Songs Themselves. Hard To Believe But Every Visual Motif On The Giant Screen Behind The Band Corresponds To Whatever Is Going On In The Song.

“The Images Remind Me Of…” Says Piet Thinking Aloud “if Some Mad Scientist Had To Capture You And Take You To A School And Play You Clips Of The World To Experiment On The Tolerance Levels Of Your Brain. These Flashes Of Images That Just Come At You But All These Images Are Actually Just Everyday Life Things Things That Either Have Happened In The Past Or Are Happening Now Which Are The World Around Us. It Splicing Together Different Aspects Of Life That Are All Quite Normal But When You Mix Them Up And Collage Them Together It’s Quite Disturbing.”

After Three Years Planning Their Revolution Dorp Are Ready To Go. With The Help Of Producer Dab Swift Snow Patrol Aqualung They’ve Honed Down Their Reams Of Ideas Into An Arsenal Of Razor-Sharp Industrial Pop Bullets That Together Make Up Debut Mini Album ‘Invisible Man’. And The World Is Taking Notice. Techno Duo The Loose Cannons Have Given ‘London Out There’ A Dancefloor Re-Rub Already Making Waves On Galaxy Radio And The Acrobatic Freerunners Last Seen Jumping Across Buildings In Madonna’s ‘Hung Up’ Video Have Signed Up For The Spectacular Clip For ‘London Out There’ Which Sees The City Itself Plunged Into Apocalypse.

There Was Pop Music Before Dorp But It Hadn’t Been Very Interesting For Years.
