The Smiths Were An English Rock Band Formed In Manchester In 1982. They Comprised The Singer Morrissey The Guitarist Johnny Marr The Bassist Andy Rourke And The Drummer Mike Joyce. They Are Regarded As One Of The Most Important Acts To Emerge From The 1980s British Independent Music Scene. The Smiths Signed To The Independent Label Rough Trade Records In 1983 And Released Their First Album The Smiths In 1984. They Based Their Songs On The Songwriting Partnership Of Morrissey And Marr. Their Focus On A Guitar Bass And Drum Sound And A Fusion Of 1960s Rock And Post-Punk Was A Rejection Of The Synth-Pop Sound That Was Predominant At The Time. And So 'Hang The Blessed DJ.' I Think It Was A Great Lyric Important And Applicable To Anyone Who Lives In England." Marr Refuted These Claims To NME In 1987 "To Those Who Took Offense At The 'burn Down The Disco' Line I'd Say 'Please Show Me The Black Members Of New Order!' For Me Personally New Order Makes Great Disco Music But There's No Black People In The Group. The Point I'm Making Is That You Can't Just Interchange The Words 'black' And 'disco' Or The Phrases 'black Music' And 'disco Music'. It Makes No Earthly Sense." This Was The First Song To Feature Craig Gannon On Guitar. Gannon Was Initially Hired To Replace Bassist Andy Rourke Who Was Fired Due To His Heroin Addiction. Rourke Was Rehired A Few Weeks Later So Marr Offered Gannon The Position Of Second Guitarist Instead. Musically This Song Is Based On T. Rex's Glam Rock Anthem "Metal Guru." "Panic" is a song by the English rock band the Smiths, released in 1986 and written by singer Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr. This song was written in reaction to an incident where the BBC DJ, Steve Wright, played the trite and spunky Wham! track, "I'm Your Man," following a news report about the Chernobyl disaster – a devastating nuclear accident that occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. Guitarist, Johnny Marr, recalled to NME in 1987: "'Panic' came about at the time of Chernobyl. Morrissey and myself were listening to a radio report about it. The stories of this shocking disaster comes to an end and then immediately we're off into Wham's 'I'm Your Man.' I remember actually saying, 'What the f*ck has this got to do with people's lives?' And so, 'Hang the blessed DJ.' I think it was a great lyric, important and applicable to anyone who lives in England."
Marr refuted these claims to NME in 1987: "To those who took offense at the 'burn down the disco' line I'd say, 'Please show me the black members of New Order!' For me, personally, New Order makes great disco music, but there's no black people in the group. The point I'm making is that you can't just interchange the words 'black' and 'disco', or the phrases 'black music' and 'disco music'. It makes no earthly sense."
This was the first song to feature Craig Gannon on guitar. Gannon was initially hired to replace bassist, Andy Rourke, who was fired due to his heroin addiction. Rourke was rehired a few weeks later, so Marr offered Gannon the position of second guitarist instead.
Musically, this song is based on T. Rex's glam rock anthem, "Metal Guru." Marr recalled to Les Inrockuptibles in 1999: "When we wrote 'Panic' Morrissey was obsessed with 'Metal Guru' and wanted to sing in the same style. He didn't stop singing it in an attempt to modify the words of 'Panic' to fit the exact rhythm of 'Metal Guru.' He also exhorted me to use the same guitar break so that the two songs are the same!" NME readers named this the Song of the Year in 1986. 21 years later, in 2007, "Panic" was ranked at #21 on the same magazine's The 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever list.
This was a single-only release and consequently did not feature on a traditional studio album. It was later included in the 1987 compilation album, Louder Than Bombs, which consists of a mixture of singles, remixes, and B-sides.
In 2007, NME placed "Panic" at number 21 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever. In 2017, Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone placed the song number six in his ranking of 73 songs by the Smiths. Louder Than Bombs Is The Third Compilation Album By English Rock Band The Smiths Released As A Double Album On March 30 1987 By Their American Record Company Sire Records. It Peaked At Number 62 On The US Billboard 200 Album Chart. Popular Demand Prompted Their British Record Company Rough Trade To Issue The Album Domestically As Well. Upon Its Release In The UK In May 1987 It Reached No. 38 On The British Charts. In 2003 The Album Was Ranked No. 365 On Rolling Stone Magazine's List Of The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time And Ranked No. 369 On A 2012 Revised List. The Album Was Certified Gold By The RIAA In 1990. The Album Was Released As The American Counterpart To Their Recent British Compilation The World Won't Listen And Consisted Of All Singles And Nearly All B-Sides That Had Not At That Point Been Available In The United States Either On Single Or Album With A Few Other Tracks Added. The Title Is Borrowed From A Line In Elizabeth Smart's Extended Prose Poem By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept. The Album Was Intended To Be A Substitute For Both The World Won't Listen And Their 1984 Compilation Hatful Of Hollow As These Had Not Been Released In The United States. This Is Why The Non-Single Track "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" From Hatful Of Hollow Was Included. Single A-Sides "This Charming Man" And "How Soon Is Now?" Had Already Been Released In The US As Bonus Cuts On The LPs The Smiths And Meat Is Murder Respectively. As With The World Won't Listen This Compilation Includes The Scrapped Single "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby" Passed Over In Favour Of "Shoplifters Of The World Unite" Albeit In A Different Shorter Mix. However This Shorter Version Of The Song Was Replaced When Bombs Was Reissued In 2011. Additionally The Louder Than Bombs Version Of "Stretch Out And Wait" Is The Version From The B-Side Of "Shakespeare's Sister" Which Features Slightly Different Lyrics. Also Of Note Is The Fact That "Ask" Appears On Both Louder Than Bombs And The World Won't Listen In A Slightly Different And Longer Mix Than Its Single Version. Due To The Album Offering Many B-Sides And The "Sheila Take A Bow" Single That Had Never Been Collected Onto An Album Before Louder Than Bombs Became Very Popular On Import With Fans In The UK. To Avoid High Import Prices Being Paid The Smiths' Domestic Record Company Rough Trade Decided To Release The Compilation As Well Provoking Cries Of Outrage By Fans Who Only Three Months Previously Had Purchased The Slimmer Single Album UK Counterpart. The Blow Was Somewhat Softened By The Fact That The Double Album Retailed At Single Album Price. After WEA Acquired The Smiths' Back Catalogue In 1992 All Smiths Albums Were Re-Released At Mid Price Including Louder Than Bombs. The Cover Art For Louder Than Bombs Designed By Morrissey Features British Playwright Shelagh Delaney Of Salford Greater Manchester. The Photograph Was Originally Published In The Saturday Evening Post After Delaney At The Age Of 19 Made Her Literary Debut With The Play A Taste Of Honey.
