Diverting From The Overall Album Themes Of Finding Joy After Heartbreak This Song Follows A Protagonist Who After Witnessing The Clinical Death Of A Dear One Probably A Family Member Maybe A Parent Which Would Connect Directly To Michelle Zauner Personal Life Suffered Severe Trauma With The Experience. As Michelle Has Suggested In An Interview The Song Finds Her Administering Her Dog Two Shots To Put It Down And Thinking About The Way Her Mother Who Died After Being In A Coma Several Weeks And Suffering. Although She Wishes She Could Have Had The Option To Prevent Her Mother’s Suffering The Way She Could With Her Dog The Song Finds Michelle Unable To Navigate Personal Relationships The Same Way Feeling That The Person She Is Connecting With Might Pass Away As Well. The Subject Of The Song Characterizes “Hell” As A Place Where You Cannot Have See Or Feel The Person You Love It’s A Place Where All Your Love Cannot Be Reciprocated Anymore. This Song Might Even Serve Has A Companion Piece To Psychopomp’s “In Heaven” Which Also Bringing Up The Grief Of Losing Her Mother Deals With The Concept Of An Afterlife. Interestingly That Song Also Mentions A Confused Dog Who Doesn’t Understand The Sudden Change. This Might Be The Saddest Song I’ve Ever Written. It’s A Companion Song To ‘In Heaven’ Off Of Psychopomp Because It’s About The Same Dog. But Here I’m Putting That Dog Down. It Was Actually Written In The Soft Sounds Era As A Bonus Track For The Japanese Release But I Never Felt Like It Got Its Due. - Via Apple Music Zauner Told Pitchfork “For An Album About Joy That Song Is The Saddest Song I Have Ever Written. It’s About Putting My Dog Down And Thinking Why Couldn’t We Just Have This Option When My Mom Was Dying? In Movies When Someone Dies They Just Close Their Eyes One Day And They’re Gone. But It’s Literally Weeks Of Someone In A Coma Pissing The Bed And Changing It. I Had To Make The Call To Give My Dog The Shots In The Same Way We’d Have To Give My Mom The Hydrocodone. Comparing Those Two Things Was Really Heavy.“
