Born In Nottingham UK 5th January 1962. Studied Music Composition And Technologies At Dartington College Of Arts With Frank Denyer Edward Cowie David Prior And Gavin Bryars. Worked With French-Canadian Acousmatic Composer Christian Calon And With English Composer Andrew Bentley At The Sibelius Academy Centre Of Music & Technology In Helsinki Finland. Commissioned By Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company To Compose The Incidental Music For Their Production Of The Tempest To Mark The 70th Anniversary Of Cornwall’s Minack Theatre In 2002. Michael Neil Began Composing As Early As The Late1970s But It Was The 1980s When He Established His Reputation And This Was Consolidated During The 1990s With A Succession Of Albums On Cleve Littlewood’s ‘Electronical Dreams’ Label Inspired By His Native Cornwall In The Far South West Of Britain. Of These Cornubia Was The Most Notable Earning For Him A Reputation For Grand Sweeping Orchestral Electronics And Otherworldly Ambience. In 2000 Neu Harmony Records – Www.Synthmusicdirect.Com - Released Towards The Unknown Region Which Demonstrated His Growing Interest In Astronomical Themes And A Move Towards More Spacious Textures And Timbres In The Synthesizer Repertoire. In 2004 Neil Graduated From Dartington College Of Arts With A Degree In Music Composition And Technology That Helped To Define The Next Stage In His Compositional Exploration Using State Of The Art Software. This Has Led The Composer To Explore The World Of Electroacoustic Music Where Natural Sound Is Often Manipulated In Order To Develop The Subtle Nuances Of Sound Itself. However Neil Has Also Explored Synthesis Within These Parameters Adding New Depth To The Palette Of His Sound World. From 2005 Neil Has Continued To Explore His Sound World And The Presentation Of His Resulting Work Within The Framework Of A Master's Degree In Contemporary Music.
Helsinki A Second Home To The Composer Is One Of His Preferred Choices To Explore Further The Themes That Interest Him. Technology Is A Cornerstone In His Contemporary Work Manipulating Natural Against Synthesized Sound. The Creation Of New Scales Of Pitch Derived From Extraneous Data Sourced From The Locations That Inspire A Composition Is Another Facet Of His Work. Presentation Rather Than “concert” Performance Is Neil’s Major Concern In One Of The Ways He Disseminates His Work.
