Nato A Bristol Cresce Ad Ipswich.
Dopo Aver Lasciato La Scuola Nel 1976 Lavora Come Commesso Negli Anni Che Lo Portano Alla Maturità. Nel Frattempo Suona Chitarra E Canta In Numerose Band Underground Di Ipswich. Una Di Queste I Fusion Si Separa Però Nel 1982 Così Decide Allora Di Dedicarsi A Una Carriera Da Cantautore Solista.
Nel 1983 Firma Un Contratto Cn La MCA Records Ed Esordisce Con Il Brano I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Agli Inizi Del 1984 Kershaw Realizza La Sua Canzone Simbolo Wouldn't It Be Good Con Un Video In Cui Sembra Un Alieno. La Canzone Si Stabilì Al 4o Posto Nella UK Singles Chart Ed Ebbe Grande Successo In Europa Specialmente In Germania Italia Svizzera E Scandinavia.
Nel Giugno Del 1983 Sposa La Sua Fidanzata Candese Di Lunga Data Sheri Considerata Da Molti Come Voce Secondaria Nei Suoi Album. Hanno Tre Figli Di Cui Il Secondo Ryan È Affetto Dalla Sindrome Di Down. Si Separano Nel Novembre 2003.
Con Il Suo Primo Album Human Racing Si Fece Conoscere Al Mondo Pubblicandovi Anche Un Rifacimento Del Suo Brano D'esordio I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Il Suo Secondo Album Fu The Riddle Dal Quale Estrasse L'omonimo Singolo Che Divenne Un Grande Successo. A Testimonianza Del Quale Kershaw Fu Invitato Ad Esibirsi Per Una Causa Nobile Come Quella Del Live Aid Del 1985 Dove Suonò Wouldn't It Be Good. Nel 2005 Pubblica Then And Now Una Raccolta Dei Suoi Più Grandi Successi Con 4 Inediti.
