Gli Extreme Sono Un Gruppo Heavy Metal Fondato A Boston Massachussets Nel 1985. La Band Raggiunse Il Picco Di Massima Popolarità A Cavallo Tra Gli Anni Ottanta E Novanta. Le Prime Sonorità Del Gruppo Risalenti Agli Inizi Di Quegli Anni Rispecchiano Molto Le Influenze Di Gruppi Come Queen E Soprattutto Van Halen "the Book Of Guitar" - Nuno Bettencourt Gruppi Fortemente Influenti Soprattutto Per Il Chitarrista. Bettencourt È Considerato Attualmente Uno Dei Virtuosi Guitar Heroes Della Compagine Internazionale. Tuttavia Gli Extreme Furono Anche Una Delle Tante Band Della Scena Hair Metal Che Persero Gli Occhi Delle Masse Dopo La Prepotente E Rivoluzionaria Irruzione Del Genere Grunge Nei Primi Anni 90. Gli Extreme Nacquero A Boston Dalle Ceneri Di Una Club Band Chiamata The Dream Che A Sua Volta Era Stata Assemblata Dall'unione Delle Band Locali Adrenaline E Direction Nel 1981 La Quale Realizzò Anche Un Disco Omonimo Per La Toppe Records Nel 1983. Da Questa Formazione Sopravviveranno Solo Gary Cherone E Il Batterista Paul Geary Che Verranno Accompagnati Dal Chitarrista Hal Lebeaux E Dal Bassista Paul Mangone. Una Volta Sotto Il Nome Di Extreme Il Gruppo Ricevette Un'inaspettata Sponsorizzazione Grazie Al Brano "Mutha Don't Want To Go To School Today " Che Vinse Una Competizione Organizzata Da MTV Nel 1985. Per Altro Questo Stesso Brano Era Stato Registrato In Origine Dai The Dream. La Formazione Venne Infine Consolidata Con L'entrata Dell'ex-Chitarrista Dei Sinful Nuno Bettencourt Nuno Duarte Gil Mendes Bettencourt Originario Delle Azzorre E L'ex Bassista Dei Daemon E In The Pink Pat Badger Che Raggiunsero Il Gruppo Nel 1986 Sostituendo Lebeaux E Mangone Quando La Band Cominciò A Costruirsi La Reputazione Di Ottima Live Band Attorno All'area Di Boston. Gli Extreme Parteciparono Ai Primi Tour Europei Nel 1986 Ad Alcuni Festival In Portogallo. Durante La Loro Ascesa Al Successo Brani Come "Suzi Wants An All Day Sucker " E "Nasty Habits" Ottennero Un Buon Successo Tramite Le Radio. L'anno Seguente La Band Vinse In "Boston Music Awards" Assieme Ai Gang Green. Lo Stesso Anno Trovarono Un Contratto Discografico Con La A&M Records E Debuttarono Con Il Brano "Play With Me" Pubblicato Nella Colonna Sonora Del Film Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure 1989 Con Keanu Reeves. Il Debut Omonimo Extreme Prodotto Da Reinhold Mack Noto Produttore Dei Queen Fallì Nel Tentativo Di Ottenere Vendite Rilevanti Al Di Fuori Dagli States. In Compenso Ricevettero Però Un Ulteriore Premio Al "Boston Music Award" Nel 1988 Per "Eccezionale Heavy Metal Band". Il Vero E Proprio Successo Avvenne Nel 1990 Con La Pubblicazione Del Secondo Disco Intitolato Pornograffitti Prodotto Da Michael Wagener Con Le Partecipazioni Straordinarie Di Pat Travers E Dweezil Zappa Che Proiettò La Band Nella Scena Internazionale. Il Disco Era Essenzialmente Un Concept Album Che Mescolava Le Sonorità Tipiche Del Pop Metal Con Frequenti Incursioni Di Elementi Funk. Il Sound Originale Della Band Divenne Un Riferimento Per L'emergente Funk Metal Oltre Ad Ottenere Un Enorme Successo. Dalle Melodie Funk Metal Di "Decadence Dance" "Get The Funk Out" All'Hair Metal Di "It 's A Monster " La Band Mostrò Il Meglio Di Sé Con Uno Stile Graffiante E Unico. La Ballad Acustica "More Than Words" Permise Alla Band Di Scalare Le Classifiche Ottenendo Il Primo Posto Nella American Singles Charts. Il Frequente Passaggio Del Video Del Brano In Bianco E Nero Su MTV Ne Assicura Il Successo Internazionale Ed In Futuro Vanterà Molte Cover In Tutto Il Mondo. Grazie Al Successo Ottenuto Bettencourt Venne Invitato A Contribuire In Qualità Di Chitarrista Alla Traccia "Black Cat" Di Janet Jackson. Nel 1991 Cherone Bettencourt E Badger Parteciparono Come Ospiti Nel Ruolo Di Coristi Nel Disco Dei Danger Danger Screw It!. Dopo Un Tour Mondiale Che Toccò Anche L'India E Giappone Si Presentò Per La Band Un Momento Storico La Loro Popolarità Crebbe Ulteriormente Grazie Ad Un'apparizione Al Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert In Onore Del Defunto Leader Dei Queen Freddie Mercury Tenutosi Il 20 Aprile 1992 Al Wembley Stadium Di Londra. Il Gruppo Venne Invitato Personalmente Dal Chitarrista Dei Queen Brian May Suonando Le Cover Di "Queen Medley" "Love Of My Life" "More Than Words". Sull'onda Del Successo Lanciano Il Loro Terzo Album "III Side To Every Story" Nel 1992. Fortemente Criticato E Con Brani Difficilmente Passabili In Radio Non Riuscirà A Raggiungere Il Successo Dell'album Precedente. Inizierà Così Per La Band Una Parabola Discendente. A Testimonianza Del Declino In Occasione Di Un Concerto Nel 1994 Al Castle Donington Festival Geary Venne Sostituito Dall'ex Batterista Degli Annihilator Mike Mangini. Dopo Un Periodo Di Stallo Gli Extreme Tentarono Di Tornare Sulle Scene Presentandosi Con Un Sound Più Moderno E Al Passo Coi Tempi Quando Pubblicarono Il Quarto Disco Waiting For The Punchline Orientato Sulle Scie Del Grunge. Tuttavia Proprio A Causa Del Dominio Assoluto Del Grunge E Delle Critiche Da Parte Dei Fans Questo Lavoro Ottenne Inevitabilmente Vendite Molto Basse. Questo Fatto Portò Bettencourt Ad Abbandonare Il Gruppo Per Dedicarsi Alla Carriera Solista. Con Cherone I Van Halen Diedero Alle Stampe Il Disco Van Halen III Fortemente Criticato Dai Fans E Critica Cosicché Il Nuovo Frontman Venne Allontanato Dopo Meno Di Un Anno. Nel 1998 Venne Pubblicato In Giappone L'EP/raccolta Degli Extreme Running Gag Per La A&M Contenente Cinque Tracce Tra Cui Tre In Versione Live. Nello Stesso Periodo Nuno Bettencourt E Mike Mangini Si Riunirono In Un Power Trio Con Il Nipote Di Nuno Donovan. Mangini Apparve Anche Nel Progetto Parallelo Del Cantante Dei Dream Theater James LaBrie Chiamato Mullmuzzler Nel 1999. Nel 2000 Badger Fece Parte Del Nuovo Progetto Fondato Dal Chitarrista Dei Saigon Kick Jason Bieler Chiamato Super Transatlantic Con Cui Pubblicò Il Disco Shuttlecock. Dopo L'allontanamento Dai Van Halen Cherone Fondò Un Nuovo Progetto Chiamato Tribe Of Judah. Quando Le Tracce Demo Emersero Su Internet Fu Una Sorpresa Per I Fan Degli Extreme Scoprire Che Questa Nuova Band Includeva Anche Mangini E Badger. Reunion
Gli Extreme Si Riunirono Nel 2004 In Occasione Del "20th Maré De Agosto Internacional Music Festival" Nell'isola Portogese Di Santa Maria Nelle Azzorre Proprio Il Luogo Di Nascita Di Nuno Bettencourt. Il Chitarrista Aveva Progettato Di Partecipare Al Festival Esibendosi Con La Sua Band Dell'epoca I Population 1 Ma Infine Giunsero Notizie Che Gary Cherone E Paul Geary Si Trovavano Nel Luogo Nell'intento Di Organizzare Un Concerto Con I Vecchi Membri Degli Extreme. In Quell'occasione L'assente Badger Venne Sostitutito Provvisoriamente Da Carl Restivo. La Loro Prima Reunion Ufficiale Su Suolo Americano Avvenne Il 18 Settembre 2004 Al "WAAF's Hillman 15th Anniversary Concert" Come Parte Del "2004 Taste Of Boston" Al City Hall Plaza Suonando Al Fianco Dei Puddle Of Mudd E Dropkick Murphys. L'ex Bassista Degli Extreme Paul Mangone Pubblicò Il Disco Solista Fly By Wire Nel Tardo 2004 E Vedeva La Partecipazione Di Gary Cherone. Allo Stesso Tempo Gli Extreme Continuarono L'attività Live Con Delle Date In Giappone Annunciate Per Il Gennaio 2005.
