Exclusive Interview With GospelReggae.Com
1. GospelReggae.Com So Tim Tell Us About Yourself Where Were You Born And Grow Up What Your Family Is Like Etc... Jah Pickney I Was Born In Fredericton New Brunswick Canada But Left There While I Was Still Just A Baby So Have No Memory Of It. Most Of My Memories Growing Up Are From Mississauga And Belleville Ontario. I Grew Up In Mississauga From Age Three To Age Seven And In Belleville From Age Seven To The Present. Belleville Is Definitely My Home Now After 16 Years. I Have An Excellent Family That Is Very Tight. My Two Older Brothers Jeremy And Brad Are My Best Friends And We Always Get Together As A Family As Often As We Can. Together With A Little Help From Mom And Dad My Brothers And I Have Started Lineage Recording Studios And We All Have A Hand In It Working As Engineers And Studio Musicians. Everyone In The Family Is Musical And We Love To Get Together To Play. 2. GospelReggae.Com How Did You Begin Doing Music? Jah Pickney I 've Always Loved Music But Really Didn't Have Much Musical Ability Myself. My Brothers Were Both In Bands Through School And Would Often Play With My Parents As Well. Wanting To Join The "family Band" I Tried Playing Bass Harmonica And Other Instruments But Nothing Seemed To Work. When I Started Getting Into Reggae And African Rhythms I Developed An Interest In Hand Percussion. Shortly After Getting My First Hand Drum God Seemed To Zap Me With Rhythm. All Of A Sudden I Had Music Flowing Through Me Without A Single Lesson. It Wasn't Long Before I Started Writing My Own Reggae Songs And With Encouragement From My Family And My Mentor Mark Mohr From Christafari And With The Help Of God It Developed Into A Powerful Ministry. 3. GospelReggae.Com Tell Me How Did Your Name "Jah Pickney" Really Come About? Any Obstacles With It--Funny Mispronunciations Etcâ€? Jah Pickney I Was Dubbed Jah Pickney A Number Of Years Before My Musical Ministry Had Developed Into Anything. Mark Mohr From Christafari Had Surprised Me With An Answer To A Fan Letter I Wrote The Band At The Age Of 11 And Due To My Young Age "Welcomed Me Into The Tribe" With The Name Jah Pickney. This Was The Beginning Of A Strong Friendship And The Name Stuck With Me. I Have Had Many Mispronounciations With The Most Common Being "Yah Pickney." I Have Also Heard "Jay Pickney " "John Pitney" And Combinations Of All The Above. The Funniest One However Was "Jabba Pikininni." 4. GospelReggae.Com What Is The Most Valuable Lesson That You Learned From Your Mom Or Dad Growing Up That You Still Apply Today? Jah Pickney My Dad Used To Be A Pastor And Left That Ministry To Focus On A Family Ministry So We Had Countless Family Meetings And Bible Classes At Home. The Most Memorable Thing My Dad Always Said Was In Response To The Beatles Song "All You Need It Love." He Taught Us What The Bible Said And Anytime We Would Hear That Song He Would Ask Us "What Do You Need?" At Which We Would Reply "All You Need Is Faith Hope And Love." Also My Dad Always Told Me To Read My Bible And Pray Everyday And Always Listen For God's Voice. My Parents Have Taught Me So Much Through My Life That I Can't Begin To Write Them Down. The Most Valuable Lessons Came From Real Life Situations. How We Would Get Through Tough Times And How To Trust In God And The Way They Reacted And Dealt With Things Was The Biggest Testimony. Basically I Am Who I Am Today Because Of Them. 5. GospelReggae.Com If You Could Share The Stage With Any Christian Or Secular Artist In The World Living Or Dead Who Would It Be? Jah Pickney The Exciting Thing Is That I Have Shared The Stage With Many Of The Artists That I Only Dreamed About Before. However There Are Always More! I Would Love To Perform With Degree WAR Tony Rebel Santana And Bob Marley To Name A Few. 6. GospelReggae.Com Is There Any Song That You Wrote In The Past That You Are Embarassed About? Anything That You Wish You Could Make Disappear? Jah Pickney Of Course Some Of The First Songs I Ever Wrote And Recorded Using A Ghetto Blaster And A Casio Keyboard Are Somewhat Embarassing. However I Have Come To Know That I Should Not Forget Where I Started And Not Be Embarassed By It Because It Is The Foundation Of What I Am Now. Still I Would Only Show It To Someone If I Could Also Show Them The Rest Of The Story. 7. GospelReggae.Com What Were The Last 5 CDs That You Put In Your Disc Changer? Jah Pickney "One Love The Best Of Bob Marley " "Strictly The Best 31 " "Bless Aka Prodigal Son €“ Still Standing " "Degree €“ Yeah Man " "Freddie Mcgreggor €“ Signature" 8. GospelReggae.Com Read Any Good Books Lately? Jah Pickney Of Course The Answer That I Have To Say Is The Bible And It Is True . I Am Also Reading Anne Of Green Gables €“ It Is A Canadian Classic That I Know Well But Realised I Had Never Actually Read It. I Read A Lot Of Books €“ I Love To Read. 9. GospelReggae.Com What's Your Favorite Verse In The Bible And Why? Jah Pickney Isaiah 40 31 "â€but Those Who Hope In The Lord Will Renew Their Strength. They Will Soar On Wings Like Eagles They Will Run And Not Grow Weary They Will Walk And Not Be Faint." I Find It To Be An Encouraging Verse. It Gives Me Faith In Times When Things Are Hard And Strength In Times Of Weakness. 10. GospelReggae.Com As Christians God Is Of Course Our True Inspiration But Beyond The Generic Response Of "Jesus " What Are Your Muses In Your Life For Lack Of A Better Word ? For Example What Are The People Places Or Things That Trigger A Fresh Musical Idea And Ultimately A New Song For You? Jah Pickney My Home Is A Very Inspiring Place. When I Look At Our Home And Property I Can't Help But Thank God For It. It Is Beautiful And A Very Relaxed Atmosphere. I Love Living In The Country With The Trees And All Of God's Wonderful Creation. It Is Also Great To Have The Studio On The Same Property As A Relaxed Atmosphere Is Great For Recording. Sometimes I Am Also Inspired By Sermons And Bibles Studies. Other Inspirations Are My Dog Amber Other Pets And Of Course My Family. Musical Inspirations Come From Many Different Artists. I Listen To Almost Everything Reggae And Also Some Latin Jazz And Doo-Wop Are Favorites. 11. GospelReggae.Com What Are The Three Things You Enjoy Most About Touring? And Least? Jah Pickney The Three Things I Enjoy The Most Are Sharing The Gospel Sharing My Music And Seeing The World. The Three Things I Like Least Are Travelling I Wish We Could Teleport Sleeping In A Strange Bed And Being Away From Family And Pets. 12. GospelReggae.Com Could You Please Give A Message To The Reggae Fans That Are Reading This And Would Like To Know More About Your Faith And Who Jesus Is To You? Jah Pickney Jesus Is Everything To Me. He Is My Saviour Friend Creator God Comforter Provider Healer Guide Hope Deliverer Redeemer Teacher Helper Protector Love And Coming King. And This Doesn't Even Scratch The Serface. I Could Not Imagine Living My Life Without Him. Things Are Hard Enough With Faith Hope And Love Without It Would Be Unbearable Not To Mention Eternity Without Him. Look To God Always For He Is Gracious And Merciful. He Will Always Accept You With Open Arms And Is Willing To Forgive And Forget. Christ Has Already Paid The Price For You All You Need To Do Is Accept That And The Wrath Of God Will Be Lifted From You And You Will Become Righteous In God's Sight And Be Given Eternal Life!
