When asked about the making of the Midsummer Station, Adam Young told Alternative Press reporters, “This past year, there’s something that’s been really compelling to me as a writer in figuring out how to make this three-minute song stirring and moving…how can I make people feel something and connect with the idea?”
Young also talks about the inspiration behind ‘Silhouette’ during an interview with Purevolume:
“I guess I’ve never been the guy to write from his own personal experiences — I’ve always preferred to write from the imagination, and somehow there was always a lot of inspiration behind that. But, for instance, the new song ‘Silhouette’ – I wrote and re-wrote that song a lot to make sure that everything in there had the right amount of darkness. Darkness that I do deal with.”
In an interview with City Pages, Adam Young (a.k.a. Owl City) stated, "It’s mainly about one relationship that kind of hit rock bottom. It kind of tore me up. I tend to write songs purely from imagination. This is definitely kind of a departure. We play it live and it’s tough to get through the song without choking up because it’s so personal."
