Originally The Name Ederlezi Is A Combination Of The Turkish Names Of Two Islamic Prophets Hızır Al-Khidr And Ilyas Elijah And Refers To The Day These Prophets Met On Earth The First Day Of Spring. "Ederlezi" is a well-known traditional Roma song, played all over the Balkans. Originally the name Ederlezi is a combination of the (Turkish) names of two Islamic Prophets, Hızır (Al-Khidr) and Ilyas (Elijah), and refers to the day these prophets met on earth, the first day of spring. Hızır + Ilyas = Hıdırellez in Turkish. Hıdırellez is the festival still celebrated in Turkey, especially by its Roma community, marking the beginning of spring. In Christian countries on the Balkan, it coincided with Saint George’s Day.
