“Mad as Rabbits” chronicles a person who has given up his position of complete freedom to live as the ideal working man that provides for his entire family. The problem is that this person has lost all joy in his life, and has become “as mad as [a] rabbit.” The title also could be making an allusion to Alice In Wonderland since they are as ‘mad as rabbits’, like the rabbit in the original book.
Then-guitarist Ryan Ross told MTV:
”I think it feels the most like the band at this point. Me and Brendon sing back and forth, and everyone is doing backup vocals on it – it was definitely the most group-sounding. In the last refrain the ‘reinvent love’ thing kind of just summed up the whole process.”
At the Hove Festival in 2008, the song was introduced as follows:
”This last song is a love song. It’s about universal love. And, uh, friendship, and hugs and kisses, and all kinds of things like that. So I want to see a lot of love going on out there all during this last song. Y'know, give your friend a hug or a kiss or a high-five or, or something…”
In a track-by-track commentary on the album, Ryan Ross, who wrote the lyrics for the song, stated:
”For me, I’d had this idea about writing a song about a character that is in the calendar business, and business was bad, and so I came up with the lyrics. They lyrics took me a long time to get the finalized version of; they were kind of pieces I’d had for a couple of weeks or a month or two, and then placed them all together. It reminded me of some kind of old session that would happen where you don’t think about it, you just kind of pick up and instrument and play it… it’s also the last song that we wrote for the album.”
Then-bassist Jon Walker told MTV:
