Geraldo Filme 1928 — 1995 Was A Legendary Singer And Composer Of Samba From São Paulo Brazil. He Was One Of The Founders And Key Figures Of The Carnaval In São Paulo Known As Well For His Extensive And Well-Researched Knowledge Of The City's History. Geraldo Filme Wrote His First Samba When He Was 10 Years Old. He Went On To Compose Several Sambas For Well-Known And Traditional Samba Schools In São Paulo Most Notably The Vai-Vai. Filme's Compositions Were Interpreted By Such Samba Greats As Beth Carvalho Beth Carvalho Canta O Samba De São Paulo Osvaldinho Da Cuíca História Do Samba Paulista And A Barca Among Others. He Was Born Into A Musical Family. His Father Played The Violin. But It Was With His Grandmother That Geraldo Filme Learned The Slave Chants That Would Be Hugely Influential In His Musical Formation. His Mother Owned A Boarding House In Campos Elíseos And Prepared Meals That The Boy Geraldo Delivered Everywhere In His Neighborhood. His Mother Would Become Known Later On For Starting The First Samba Group Formed By Black Women Only Which Later Became The Escola De Samba Paulistano Da Glória. As A Young Boy Geraldo Filme Also Spent A Lot Of Time In The Impromptu And Informal Samba And Capoeira Performances That Working Men Would Organize In Barra Funda's Largo Da Banana A Place Famous For Harboring The Music And Traditions Of Afro-Brazilian Communities That Moved To São Paulo. read less
