In The Spring Of 1986 Dischord Founders Ian MacKaye And Jeff Nelson Both Formerly Of Minor Threat Went To England To Visit And Were Invited By Southern Records Founder John Loader To Do Some Recording While They Were There. Southern Was Operated Out Of A Row House In A Neighborhood Called Wood Green And John Had A 24-Track Studio Set Up In The Garage. They Recorded Four Songs Including "Me And You" Something That The Two Had Been Playing Together In The Basement For Many Years And "We All Fall Down" Which Was Written By Ian For Embrace But Had Been Passed On By The Band. Having Had Such A Good Time Recording And Hanging Out In London Ian And Jeff Decided To Release A Single To Mark The Occasion. The Name Was Chosen Since It Was Recorded Over Easter Weekend. That Summer They Tried Forming A New Band Called Egg Hunt With Ex-Members Of Gray Matter But It Wasn't Meant To Be. The Southern Session Would Turn Out To Be The Last Time The Two Would Record Music Together. During A 1986 Trip To England's Southern Studios To Discuss Possible European Distribution Of Dischord Releases With Owner John Loder The Three Decided To Make A Record Together And The Project Was Dubbed "Egg Hunt" For Festive Reasons It Was Easter Time . John Took A Seat In The Producer's Chair While Ian And Jeff Handled All The Instruments. Their Only Release A Self-Titled 7" Was An Excellent Example Of Melodic Post-Hardcore. In Fact The Song "We All Fall Down" Appearing On The Second Side Was A Song That Ian Had Originally Written For His Earlier Band Embrace But Was Discarded By The Band. Although A Seemingly Small Release In Comparison To Dischord's Significant Catalog This Record Is Still A Notable Example Of MacKaye And Nelson's Songwriting Abilities As Well As Chemistry Together As Artists.
They Liked This Project So Much Actually That When They Returned To Washington DC They Tried Turning Egg Hunt Into An Actual Band. They Recruited Former Gray Matter Members Steve Niles And Geoff Turner But Ian's Energies And Creativity Were Soon Directed Toward The Forming Of Fugazi While Jeff Geoff Steve And Former Gray Matter Guitarist Mark Haggerty Started The Dischord Band 3.
