Vic Sadot Wrote His First Version Of A Humorous Parody Update Of Phil Ochs' Famous Song "Love Me I'm A Liberal" In 2008 . The Vic Sadot Version Of "Love Me I'm A Liberal" Was Recorded On December 20 2010 One Day After What Would Have Been Phil Ochs' 70th Birthday. Sadot Who Wrote And Recorded A Tribute To Phil Ochs In 1977 Titled "Broadside Balladeer" Recorded His 2010 Parody Version Of "Love Me I'm A Liberal" At Robot Envy Productions Studio In Berkeley California. Sammy Fielding Was The Recording Engineer. The Sadot Lyrical Version Was First Released On Last FM On Dec. 26 2010 As A Full Length Free Mp3 Download On His "in-Process" CD Titled "Berkeley Calling". Many Others Have Done Previous Update Paradies Of This Phil Ochs Song With Varying Impact. Songwriter Vic Sadot Says That He Was Most Inspired To Write An Update Of His Hero's Song By The Version Done By Mojo Nixon And Jello Biafra. Webmaster And Ochs Chronicler Extraordinaire Trent Notes That The Mojo-Jello Update Was Placed "on Their Album 'Prairie Home Invasion'. Mojo Nixon Sang This Updated Version Solo On Comedy Central During Their 1996 State Of The Union Show." Trent Quotes Jan Hauenstein Who Says ``Phil Ochs Didn´t Write The Melody Which Comes From An Old Irish Folk Song "Rosin The Bow". That Melody Also Found A New Home In Several American Folk Songs Before Phil Put It To Good Use. The Melody For The "chorus-Line" Love Me Love Me Love Me I´m A Liberal Is Probably Original Ochs Though.'' According To Kim Ruel In "History Of An American Folk Song" At About.Com "Love Me I'm A Liberal" Was "written In 1966 The Tune Was Included On His 'Phil Ochs In Concert' Album From That Same Year." Ochs' Introductory Remarks For This Song Stated "In Every American Community There Are Varying Shades Of Political Opinion. One Of The Shadiest Of These Is The Liberals. An Outspoken Group On Many Matters 10 Degrees To The Left Of Center In Good Times...10% To The Right Of Center If It Affects Them Personally... So Here Then Is A Lesson In Safe Logic." Vic Sadot Describes The Original "Love Me I'm A Liberal" As Such "Ochs Skewered The Political Posturing And Self-Serving Hypocrisy Of Many Who Wore The Political Label Of "liberal" So Proudly And Ostentatiously During The US Civil Rights And Vietnam War Era While Maintaining A Comfortable Distance From Any Deep And Dangerous Engagement Of The Truth At The Roots Of The Systemic Corruption Facing Citizens Of A Representative Repubic." Sadot's 2010 Update Replaces "Medgar Evers" With "the Kennedy's" "Korea" With "Iraq And Afghanistan" "Humphry" With "Obama" "the People Of Old Mississippi" With "the People Of Mesopotamia" "Pete Seeger" With "Bob Dylan" "the UN" With "UN Troops" "Lerner And Goldman" With "Israel And Occupation" And "the Old Union Hymms" With "Blowin' In The Wind". The Song Continues In The Great Tradition Of "folk Process" And In The Use Of Humor To Expose Political Hypocrisy And Contradictions A Tradition For Which Phil Ochs Has Established His Historical Place In "Americana" Music. Vic Sadot Met Phil Ochs At The Cellar Door In Washington DC In May Of 1973. He Interviewed Ochs With Rich Lang On WGTB On The "Interface" Program. Ochs Had Returned From Travels In South America Including Chile Where He Met And Sang With Victor Jara. The Watergate Scandal Was Beginning To Undermine The Presidency Of Richard Nixon. Ochs Performed An Update Of His Own Song Titled "Here's To The State Of Mississippi" To A Newer Verstion Titled "Here's To The State Of Richard Nixon". There Is An On-Line Gathering Place For Phil's Fans To Share Phil Ochs Memorabilia At "No More Songs" Dot Com Where Sadot Donated His Ochs Interview In 2008. Ochs Committed Suicide In 1976 In A Bout With Mental Depression. Vic Sadot Wrote A Tribute Song To Him In 1977 Titled "Broadside Balladeer". Sadot Explains "Phil Ochs Had Over 70 Songs Published In 'Broadside The National Topical Song Magazine' That Was Published For Many Years By Sis Cunningham And Gordon Friesen. Ochs Spent Many Hours In Their New York City Apartment And Many People First Heard About Him Bob Dylan Malvina Reynolds Tom Paxton And Many Other Folk Troubadours Through That Little Magazine. Sis Cunningham Had Been The Accordion Player In The Almanac Singers A Group That Pre-Dated The More Famous Weavers. The Almanac Singers Had Two Legendary Folk Singers As Group Members Woody Guthrie And Pete Seeger. In 1982 Vic Sadot Visited Sis And Gordon From Delaware While He Was In New York City To Play At A Folk City Open Mic In Greenwich Village. Vic Was Surprised By Gordon Who Presented Him With 400 Highly Redacted Pages Of Phil Ochs' FBI Files. Gordon Friesen Had Obtained The Files By A Freedom Of Information Act Request. Gordon Told Vic That He Was Feeling Ill And Not Up To The Task Of Reviewing The Documents And Writing An Article About The Files. He Asked Vic To Do It. The Article Appeared In Broadside First And Later In The Delaware Alternative Press. It Was Re-Published Here At Last FM In 2007 As A Journal Blog By Vic Sadot Who Also Founded The Last FM Group Called "Broadside Balladeers".
