Japanese Breakfast Is The Solo Musical Project Of Korean-American Musician Michelle Zauner Of Little Girl Big Spoon Post Post Little Big League . Zauner Released A Tape In June 2013 Under The Solo Moniker Japanese Breakfast. The Tape Was Titled June And Boasted Thirty Tracks Written And Recorded Every Day Of The Month. A Stark Deviation From Little Big League's Guitar-Based Indie Rock It Showcased Zauner's Dark Lyrics Unique Vocals And Inherent Knack For Pop Melody.
Two Bedroom Pop Cassettes Later Japanese Breakfast Returns With A First Full-Fledged LP And Vinyl Release Psychopomp. The Album Explores Zauner's Experimental Interests And Hosts A Wide Range Of Sound Jarring Anime Samples Minimalist Ballads Rhythms And Synths Reminiscent Of Tango In The Night-Era Fleetwood Mac Paired With The Moody Intimacy Of Mount Eerie. In This Song Michelle Sings Directly To A Significant Other Mentioning Fantasies Of Her Lover Leaving Her And Asks Them To Make Up For The Lies That They Have Told Her. "'Back In 2018 I Decided To Try Out Writing Sessions For The First Time And I Was Having A Tough Go Of It. My Publisher Had Set Me Up With Jack Tatum Of Wild Nothing. What Happens Is They Lie To You And Say ‘Jack Loves Your Music And Wants You To Help Him Write His New Record!’ And To Him They’d Say ‘Michelle Loves Wild Nothing She Wants To Write Together!’ Once We Got Together We Were Like ‘I Don’t Need Help. "Be Sweet" is the second track on Japanese Breakfast’s third full-length album. It is happy and upbeat when it is first listened to, but after looking more closely at the lyrics, there is a dark side. In this song, Michelle sings directly to a significant other, mentioning fantasies of her lover leaving her, and asks them to make up for the lies that they have told her.
"'Back in 2018, I decided to try out writing sessions for the first time, and I was having a tough go of it. My publisher had set me up with Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing. What happens is they lie to you and say, ‘Jack loves your music and wants you to help him write his new record!’ And to him they’d say, ‘Michelle loves Wild Nothing, she wants to write together!’ Once we got together we were like, ‘I don’t need help. I’m not writing a record.’ So we decided we’d just write a pop song to sell and make some money. We didn’t have anyone specific in mind, we just knew it wasn’t going to be for either of us. Of course, once we started putting it together, I realised I really loved it. I think the distance of writing it for ‘someone else’ allowed me to take on this sassy ‘80s women-of-the-night persona.
